Medical ICU is a 20-bed mixed ICU/Step Down unit. Staffing ratios

Floating to the sister unit is required for Step Down patients at a
ratio of 1:3 or for progressive level patients at a ratio of 4:1.
Patient population includes those with severe respiratory failure,
such as pneumonia, ARDS, COPD, or asthma exacerbations, often
requiring mechanical ventilation or high-flow oxygen support.
Patients experiencing sepsis and septic shock frequently require
vasopressors, invasive monitoring, and aggressive fluid management.
The unit also manages patients with hemodynamic instability,
including hypotension, arrhythmias, or shock states. Neurologic
conditions, such as altered mental status, metabolic
encephalopathy, overdose, or stroke (non-surgical), are also
treated. Complex metabolic and endocrine disorders, such as
diabetic ketoacidosis, severe electrolyte abnormalities, or liver
failure, are part of the patient population. Cardiac conditions not
requiring immediate intervention, including heart failure
exacerbations, cardiomyopathy, or post-cardiac arrest care, are
managed. Additionally, gastrointestinal and hepatic failures,

addressed in this unit. Typical patient needs include continuous
cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring. Skills in managing invasive
lines, such as arterial lines, are required. Nursing staff will
